ESCR rowers on the Tred Avon
Do I need to have any experience?

Nope. The majority of our rowers learned how to row as adults through our ESCR program. You will learn all you need to know during one of our springtime Learn to Row clinics.

What if I think I'm too old/short/weak/out of shape/etc. to learn to row?

YOU'RE NOT -- anyone can learn to row! Our rowers are men and women of all sizes and abilities, ranging in age from 20s to 80s -- yes, 80s! As long as you can lift approximately 30lbs (to help carry boats overhead) and get down on the dock and back up again (gracefully or not), you can learn to row.

Where do you row?

Lucky us, we row on the scenic Tred Avon river in Easton, MD. We are deeply grateful to Evergreen at Easton Point which allows us launch our boats from their beautiful waterfront.

What kinds of boats do you have?

We have a variety of boats available for both sweep rowing (1 oar/person) and sculling (2 oars/person). Our current inventory includes:

Sweep

  • II

  • IV

  • VIII

Scull

  • Double

  • Single

  • Quad

We generally row with a mix of genders, ages, and skill levels.

Does the team participate in any regattas or races?

A few, all within driving distance. Races we participate in are determined each season based on the team's interest and availability. We also have several fun scrimmages with the local youth program, Freedom Rowers.

We primarily row for fun and fitness!

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes, and be able to put on a life jacket while in the water, in the unlikely event that you need to. We take your safety on the water seriously.

How much does it cost to participate?

We have four different membership options based on your needs. And completing the Learn to Row clinic entitles you to a discount on your first year's membership.

We don't want there to be any barriers to your getting on the water, so please inquire about sliding payments and scholarship funding.

What if I prefer to be a coxswain?

Well then you'd be our new best friend! The coxswain (pronounced "cox-un") is the person in the boat responsible for steering and motivating the crew and a pivotal member of the team. Again, no experience necessary. Please contact us to learn more.

OK, I'm in! How do I sign up?
